Portraits, Unique Heirlooms

Painting a portrait in oil or drawing a portrait using pastels, not only captures the likeness of a persoline-height: 25px;n or their pet. It also vibrates with the personality and energy of both the sitter and the artist. The fluidity and the sensuousness of the medium speaks to our humannesss, and like nothing else can, a painted portrait captures with grace and elegance the emotional essence of who we are.

With a portrait you can:
  • Remember a loved one, a spouse, a child, a grandchild or pet.

  • Create a treasured heirloom for your family.

  • Celebrate a special occasion.

  • Honor a business or civic leader.

  • Express your gratitude to volunteers and donors in your community.

Creating a Portrait

The Process begins with an initial consultation at my studio where we get to know each other. Details are discussed like who is to be painted, their relationship to you, where the finished painting will be hung, and who will own it. This helps us to decide issues as basic as determining an appropriate size and the color pallete. We can use a favorite photo, or schedule a time for a photo and/or sketching session to use as a basis for the portrait.

It takes approzimately 6 to 8 weeks for me to paint a portrait. Fees, negotiable depending on size and the number of people being painted, are discussed and mutually agreed upon prior to initiating the commission along with a 50% non-refundable deposit.

You can also commission a

  • Landscape Painting—of your home, a favorite outdoor location, a scene of the Southern Maine Coast or a special vacation memento. (For ideas or examples check out the Water & Landscape portfolio).
  • Still Life Painting—(Check out the Still Life portfolio).

  • Calligraphic Work—have your favorite quotes custom designed & hand-lettered. (Check out the Calligraphy portfolio).

  • Painting with Calligraphy— You can select one of my painting from the landscape or still life portfolios & then combine it with a favorite quote or saying  to make a unique original piece of art, printed on archival paper as a giclee print. (Check out the Calligraphy/Print portfolio to see an example of these possible combinations).

  • Graphic Design—personal logos, corporate identities, stationery, business cards, brochures, newsletters, advertisements, coupons, posters, book jackets and signage for special events—all custom designed & hand-crafted using calligraphy. (See the Graphic Design portfolio for examples).

Dear Bonnie,
Thanks for the portrait of Sidara. We both love it. You captured her spirit.

Dear Bonnie,
We are writing to let you know how pleased we are with the portrait you did of our grandson, Sam. When we saw the portrait you did, we were overwhelmed. The portrait expresses Sam; his personality was captured in a way that was uncanny. We cannot thank you enough for the portrait of our grandson.

Dear Bonnie,
Thanks so much for the lovely and striking calligraphy and cover illustration you conjured for my book, Graviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World. Authors always have a cover in mind, and the usual lament is that the publisher pays no attention. That was also true in my case, but the difference is that what I got is better.

Everyone comments on how intriguing and effective this cover is—including friends in the book business who are real design snobs. I only hope they all like my words as much.

Thank you again. Beautiful work.
                                                                                                —Best regards,
                                                                                                   Alan Weisman, MA

Dear Bonnie,
The painting you made of Zorba is one of my most treasured possessions. You captured my cat's personality so beautifully from a collection of different photographs, literally bringing him to life on canvas. Zorba recently died, and it's been a very difficult experience for me. But when I look at the painting you created, I feel as if I am connected to him again. I highly recommend you to anyone who is looking for a portrait to be made of a loved one. You don't just create a likeness. Somehow you magically reproduce your subject's very essence in the most amazing way. Your portraits are well worth the price. I tell everyone I know about your painting of Zorba. You certainly made a difference in my life.

Bonnie creates such marvelous paintings. I have been fortunate enough over the years to acquire several of her portraits and still lifes. They are a constant source of delight for myself and my family and friends. She studies her subjects so carefully and portrays them with tremendous sensitivity and vibrancy. The result is something far beyond mere likeness. She manages to imbue the image with the very essence of its spirit, a soulfulness that only a painting can achieve.

                                                                                               —Claudia Brzoza, Brunswick, ME

I am writing to let you know how much our family (and friends) enjoy the oil painting you did of Cassidy. You managed to capture the trLee S. Townsend & Leslie Holmesue essence of Cassidy's impish and effervescent spirit. The portrait is proudly displayed in our living room. Friends and family who visit always remark on how well you were able to capture the spirit of her personality and presence. I am not sure you are aware of the significance of the roses Cassidy holds in her portrait, but each year her Papa gives her a bouquet of roses: one rose for each year since her birth. Many thanks for such a beautiful portrait of our little princess.

The portrait of our two-day old grandson, Nicholas, is a family treasure. It captures the unique beauty and wonder of the newly born perfectly. Thank You Bonnie.

                                                                                              —Mary Hall, Cumberland Foreside, ME

As a theatre artist, I can say that Bonnie's painting of my newborn, Nicholas, does what any art should do. It observes humanity, turns humanity's amp up a bit, and holds it up for others to hear. In the paint, Nicholas glows in a way that no photograph or digital media could ever capture or rapture; I enjoy living with it every day.

Brian forwarded me the email you sent him with the photo of Zoe's portrait. You are quite an artist—it's beautiful! Thanks so much for doing that! I can't wait to see the original the next time I go to my parents house.
