Bonnie Spiegel Paintings
I can hardly remember when I didn't want to be an artist.
My earliest art-related memory is of my older brother, Danny, drawing. I think I was about four. He looked like he was having fun, so I tried it too. That's when my obsession with art began.
Art class was always my favorite subject. While a senior in high school I got a scholarship to a painting program at New York University, and afterwards I won a place at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, a tuition free college, where I earned my BFA. A few years later, while my husband was in graduate school, I studied further at Boston University's School of Fine Arts.
My career began in New York City as a book designer at Random House and Alfred A. Knopf Publishers. When my children were born, I began freelancing. After moving to Cambridge, Mass., I continued to design books and book jackets. That led to a new focus, lettering for book jacket titles. And that in turn led to customized lettering assignments for ad agencies and corporate and private clients. Later moving up the coast to Portland, Maine, still freelancing, my focus gradually morphed from lettering back again to painting. While intellectually stimulating, the process of producing lettered headlines, logos and calligraphic pieces began to become routine. It wasn't enough. I wanted more.
That's why I paint too. Even when my main focus was freelancing as a calligrapher, I always found time to paint. But now things are reversed. Most of my time now is spent painting while occasionally I'll squeeze in a calligraphy assignment.
In addition to painting and calligraphy, I teach art. I lead classes and workshops for both children and adults. Listed as an Education Artist with the Maine Arts Commission, I was also juried into their MaineArtistAccess listing. For more than 30 years I taught at the University of Southern Maine's Center for Continuing Education, and for the last 28 years, privately at my studio.
Exhibiting here in Maine, across the country and Europe, my work has been collected by both private and corporate clients.
